‘Suit of Armour’
Atacama Suit Review
Let me start with this review, my review, nobody else’s review…….it is all mine, and it is all about the HELD Atacama Suit Review
It is very important that you understand I was sponsored the Atacama Suit due to my motorbike adventures, reviews and being an all round good egg !
Let me start at the beginning…….
THIS is no ordinary suit, so you must, therefore, expect something special, and you will NOT be disappointed. I have had the HELD Atacama suit since the last 1/4 of 2019 and have ridden quite a few miles so now feel I can comment on my experiences. (I have not just gone out for one day and written something for a magazine to get paid!)
First – This ‘SUIT OF ARMOUR’……….made from laminated Gortex, it gives you a feeling of stiffness, a feeling of security, a feeling of looking the absolute mutts dangly bits. With a back protector, chest protectors (yes chest protectors – optional extra), combined with waterproof and windproof zips (that you can unzip for amazing wind flow through the suit to keep you cool – there are more zips than a zip factory on the Atacama, that you can open in warm/hot weather that keeps you very comfortable indeed). Not only does everything feel in place with knee protectors that you can position exactly where you want them, but the excellent elbow, shoulder, and hip protection too……in fact I have even thought about falling off so that I can test this stunning suit to its maximum. However, as I write this masterpiece I am sitting in the Atacama trousers having lost over 2 stones in the last 3 months and they are looking and feeling like ‘BAGGY TROUSERS’ (great phrase for a song that I think). Nothing to do with the trousers just me being somewhat thinner than the fat wobbly twerp I was earlier this year. That being said there is waist adjustment with velcro on the sides and having pulled them tight it is rather an odd look (looked at myself in a really long mirror)……..more on this later!
Having also pulled in the waist adjustment on the Atacama jacket making me look somewhat like a big grey thin waisted wasp, everything still feels in place. There is the question of falling off on purpose to test the suit, but now I am no so sure……the suit will be fine it will be me rolling around on the inside like a crisp being salted!!
There you go I am writing about my experiences of the Atacama suit that is 3XL in size, when in actual fact I am more XL these days (smirk coming across my face). BUT………….
A suit lacking in the quality that this Atacama suit is I would be more concerned. This is purely down to the fact my 3XL suit on my XL frame has a quality to stop the suit flapping in the wind, breeze, or even standing still !!………
THE ATACAMA still feels like a suit of armour, no flapping, no windsock effect, no ballooning of the material, and all the protection bits in place……..is there any other suit that if you lost over 2 stones in weight resulting in going down 2 sizes would still work like the suit that was quite ‘snug’ just 3 months ago, well……when I say snug (cough cough).
INCREDIBLE, ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE
ALL HAIL THE ATACAMA
BEST A RIDER CAN WEAR
NOW……the minus points 🙁
Yes, there are two, but I am sure there is no suit on the market that is 100% – not even tailor-made.
Number 1 – there is no high neck with a velcro fastening to keep the wind / rain out and that is a shame, however easily fixed with a HELD Gortex balaclava that keeps everything wind and rain-free. In fact, this makes the neck area even BETTER than a high velcro fastening. It is a minus point though because it would just make the neck feel more fitted – solution, just shut up and buy the balaclava 🙂
Number 2 – The trousers are a great fit, but………the bottom of the leg is very very tight when putting the trousers over your boots, not when the zip is undone, but when you are fastening the zip again. I have tried 3 different makes of boot and the zip fastens so tight there is no movement when you sit on the bike. This results in the inside of the knee protector pushing against your knee and has in the past become really uncomfortable – solution……don’t take the zip all the way down and that has worked for me. Also wearing a very thin base layer under the Atacama trousers prevents knee pain from the knee protector. This may just be me because I am rather long-legged and my trousers ride up quite a bit when I sit down.
Overall what would I give this ‘SUIT OF ARMOUR’
I am going to give it a HUGE great 9.5 out of 10
WHY ? – because it is the most secure I have ever felt in a suit – because I look amazing in it – because I believe it is the BEST textile suit on planet motorbike. PLUS I am considering eating pies again to make my 3XL fit better !!
NOTE – do you think if I put it in the wash it might shrink to fit my new slimmed down athletic body 🙂
